Kids have their own language. It’s called fun. They do things because it makes them laugh and smile. They are in their own little toddler world…and this is what they hear when we talk to them.

WHAT MOM SAYS:

“Bath time!”

WHAT TODDLERS HEAR:

“Time to run around the entire house naked!”

Mom: “Pick up your toys.”

Toddler hears: “Laugh and run the other direction.”

Mom: “You only need a little toothpaste.”

Toddler hears: “Squeeze half the tube out and make a mess in the sink.”

YOU SAY "STOP FIGHTING." THEY HEAR "YOU GOT TIME FOR ONE MORE"

“STOP FIGHTING.” “YOU HAVE TIME FOR ONE MORE QUICK HIT.”

Mom says: “Stop that.”

Toddler hears: “Do whatever you were doing but do it faster and louder.”

Mom: (At a restaurant) Sit down and color your menu!

Toddler hears: “Stand up, turn around, and try to make the other customers smile.”

Mom: “Go wash hands, it’s dinner time.”

Toddler hears: “Keep playing.”

Mom: “Do you have to go pee-pee?”

Toddler hears: “Do you want to stop playing?”

Mom says: “You can’t play with my phone.”

Toddler hears: “Go and hide under my bed and turn the phone all the way down.”

THIS IS MY PHONE. NOT MOMMY'S.
